Abstract

Cohousing is a community housing model that promotes coexistence and collaboration among its residents. Although initially not directly related to tourism, it could be adapted and applied as a sustainable strategy in the tourism sector in Mexico. The purpose of this study was to recognize that cohousing in the context of tourism implies the creation of communities of tourists and local residents who share a common space and collaborate in sustainable tourism activities. Under a qualitative and quantitative analysis of a mixed type. It was possible to identify that cohousing can be adapted as a sustainable strategy in tourism in Mexico by fostering collaboration, the efficient use of resources, the promotion of local culture, the collaborative economy, responsible tourism and the creation of networks. Implementing this model would require the participation of local communities, tourists and competent authorities to develop policies and legal frameworks that promote and support this community approach.
