Bioluminescence is a chemical process that occurs inside living organisms, causing them to emit light. It has long been a source of curiosity for scientists and tourists alike. In Mexico, several coastal tourist destinations, such as Laguna de Manialtepec in Oaxaca and Isla de Holbox in Quintana Roo, offer the opportunity to observe this natural spectacle, while other destinations such as Bucerías in the state of Nayarit, despite having the same resource, have not taken full advantage of it. This study set out to analyze the potential of the bioluminescence phenomenon in Banderas Bay using established instruments such as CICATUR/OAS and a tourist opinion survey. It found that the resource is considered to have high tourism potential due to its characteristics, ranging from aesthetic beauty to accessibility. In addition, the people surveyed consider that, although a large part of them have not had the opportunity to visit, they are interested in learning about and taking tourist routes related to the natural phenomenon studied. It was also found that a study of legal and regulatory aspects is required, including those related to the protection of coastal and marine ecosystems and the economic and social implications of tourist activity in the region.
