In Misión de la Universidad en nuestros días: un enfoque interdisciplinar. Libro homenaje al profesor Luis Gutiérrez Espada (Bueno, 2018), where this article is located, I began by recalling something that should be obvious but has long since been forgotten. The university, a genuinely European institution in its origin and, therefore, deeply linked to Western civilization, was born from the importance that this civilization –ours– always attached to knowledge, which led it to create spaces where it could progress from more adequate and autonomous way.
